VS Code and JetBrains open-source extension (Apache 2.0) to connect any LLM and AI model to your IDE

Development & no-code

Overview

Continue is an open-source extension under Apache 2.0 license for VS Code and all JetBrains IDEs (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, Rider) that lets you connect any LLM of your choice directly into your editor. You can use OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, or local Ollama/LM Studio models. The economic model is radically transparent: Continue itself is completely free with no markup or commission on API costs. You pay the LLM provider directly only for each request you make. For moderate use with OpenAI or Anthropic, actual cost is between $0 and $5/month depending on usage intensity.

For teams wanting centralized management and unified configuration, Continue Hub offers a paid team management tier with centralized control, but the base extension remains entirely free to use without commitment. The interface remains English only, with no official French localization. The tool supports in-IDE conversational chat, predictive code completion, assisted code refactoring and task automation via generalist or specialized LLMs. The major strength is total flexibility: you choose your LLM completely and precisely control costs without depending on a proprietary commercial platform. The weakness is that setup requires minimum technical competency to point to the right LLM and manage your API key securely.

Our verdict

Best for any developer wanting lightweight, open-source AI assistant integration into their IDE, without depending on a closed commercial platform, and who has an API key for an LLM (OpenAI, Anthropic, or local Ollama). Not for you if you are uncomfortable managing an API key or technical configuration: Continue requires minimum configuration skills to point to the right LLM.
