Google Gemini Code Assist

Gemini code assistant for Google Cloud, billed per user within the platform, no free offer for solo developers

Development & no-code

Overview

Gemini Code Assist is Google Cloud's AI coding assistant, available in Visual Studio Code and IntelliJ IDEA for code completion, generation and chat, with a multi-step agent mode and understanding of local codebase. Since June 2026, Google ended the free offer for individuals (Gemini Code Assist for individuals) as well as the public Gemini CLI, redirecting these uses to its new Antigravity platform. The tool now exists only as a per-user subscription within Google Cloud: the Standard edition is billed hourly, approximately $0.026 (annual commitment) to $0.031 (monthly commitment) per hour per license, roughly $19 to $23/user/month; the Enterprise edition costs approximately $0.062 to $0.074/hour, roughly $45 to $54/user/month, purchasable from the Gemini administration console or on commercial request.

The official pricing website is available in French (cloud.google.com/gemini/pricing), Google Cloud documenting its compliance commitments, including GDPR, at the platform level. The Enterprise edition adds code customization on private repos, integration with Firebase, BigQuery, Cloud Run and Apigee, plus higher agent quotas, with an API accessible via Google Cloud. The major limit for an SME or solo developer is precisely the disappearance of the individual free offer: there is no longer a way to use Gemini Code Assist without a paid Google Cloud license per user, which drives solo developers toward Antigravity or competitors still offering a free tier.

Our verdict

Best for organizations already customers of Google Cloud who want a code assistant integrated with Firebase, BigQuery and their existing infrastructure. Not for you for solo or occasional use: the individual free offer was discontinued mid-2026, the tool is now a per-user Google Cloud subscription.
