Mathway
Online math solver for algebra, trigonometry, calculus and chemistry: type or photograph a problem and receive a detailed solution
Overview
Mathway is an online problem solver covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, linear algebra and chemistry. The user types or photographs a problem and Mathway provides the answer. With a Premium subscription ($9.99/month or $39.99/year), each problem displays intermediate steps and method explanations. The app is available in web and mobile versions (iOS, Android, Windows, Amazon), with a 7-day free trial on the mobile app. The service has existed since 2002 and counts millions of active users. The free plan limits access to detailed steps and displays ads.
Mathway offers no French-language interface. No documented public API. The tool is a standalone product without integration to other services: no LMS or CRM connection. A recurring criticism is that Mathway, like Photomath, facilitates academic fraud (direct copy-paste of the solution without learning). Mathway generally rates similarly to Photomath in user satisfaction, but both receive the same complaint: these tools are built to verify answers, not to teach. For independent learners or individuals needing quick help, the advantage is interface simplicity and web access without requiring an app.
Our verdict
Best for math students wanting to verify their answers or understand a method without consulting a tutor in person. Not for you in school settings as a learning tool: risk of answer copying without understanding is very high.
