Metabase

Self-service open-source BI to build dashboards and query your data without being a data analyst

Données & analyse

Overview

Metabase is a self-service business intelligence tool that connects to 20+ data sources (SQL databases, cloud data warehouses) and lets you create questions, dashboards and alerts without writing complex queries, thanks to a visual query builder and, more recently, an AI assistant that can generate SQL from natural-language questions. The open-source version, self-hosted, is completely free with unlimited users, making it a very cost-effective option for an SME with a little technical skill in house. Managed Cloud offerings (Starter at $100/month, Pro at $575/month) add turnkey hosting, advanced permissions and embedded analytics.

Metabase's interface defaults to English without officially highlighted French localization, though some partial community translations exist for other languages. The main strength for an SME is the choice between free self-hosting (requiring minimal DevOps skills for install and upkeep) and a paid managed offering if you prefer not to run your own infrastructure. An API lets you automate content creation or export data to other tools.

Our verdict

Best for SMEs and independents with some engineering skill who want a free, open-source BI tool to visualize their data without paying licensing fees. Not for you if you have no technical resources for self-hosting and a tight budget: the managed Cloud offering, simpler but paid, starts at $100/month, a meaningful cost for a micro-enterprise.
