Novelcrafter

Novel writing workshop with narrative bible, user-selected AI via personal API key, and worldbuilding management

Writing & content

Overview

Novelcrafter is a novel writing workshop that organizes books, series, and universes in a shared narrative bible (characters, places, chronology) and operates on a 'bring your own key' model: the subscription pays only for access to the platform, and each user connects their own AI API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, OpenRouter, or local models via Ollama), billed separately per usage. The Scribe plan ($4/month) covers organization without AI; Hobbyist ($8/month) adds scene summarization and character extraction by AI; Artisan ($14/month) adds a workshop chat; Specialist ($20/month) opens collaborative team writing. A free 21-day trial is offered without credit card.

The Novelcrafter interface remains in English, with no French version announced by the publisher, but French writing is possible in practice since text is generated by the AI model connected by the user (OpenAI, Anthropic, or other), which handle French: the quality then depends on the chosen model, not on Novelcrafter itself. The tool does not offer its own API for developers. The BYOK model is economical on the subscription but requires creating and managing your own account with an AI provider, adding a technical step and variable cost difficult to anticipate for a non-technical author.

Our verdict

Recommended for technically-minded authors who want an economical novel workshop and connect the AI model of their choice. Not for you if you want an all-inclusive price without managing a separate API key: the BYOK model adds a setup step and variable usage cost not included in the subscription.
