Photomath

App to solve math problems by photo or entry: detailed solutions, graphs and step-by-step explanations for all levels

Education

Overview

Photomath is a mobile and web app that solves math problems by camera photo or manual entry. For each problem, the app displays the final answer, then intermediate steps with written explanations and graphical representation (for algebra, trigonometry, calculus). It covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, statistics and more. The free plan offers answers without details; the annual plan ($69.99/year) unlocks detailed solutions, offline mode and web access. A monthly plan ($9.99/month) offers the same billed monthly. The app has been downloaded over 100 million times according to app stores (though this metric alone doesn't validate quality).

Photomath offers no French-language interface: the app is English-only, though French-speaking users can access it. No public API or LMS integration. The product was founded in 2014 and remains very popular with secondary students (100M+ downloads). The model is simple: a standalone app without integration to other systems. Unlike interactive tutors, Photomath displays the solution directly without asking users to progress step by step. The most common criticism is app risk to enable copying solutions without students actually learning. 'Copy-paste' is very easy, which concerns teachers. For personal verification use, it's efficient; in the classroom, control is difficult.

Our verdict

Best for high school and college students wanting to verify solutions or understand steps in complex math problems. Not for you as a classroom teaching tool: risk that students 'copy' the solution directly without real learning is very high.
