Plantix
Instant diagnosis of crop disease, pests and nutrient deficiency by smartphone photo
Overview
Plantix, developed by PEAT GmbH (Berlin, founded 2015), is the world's most-used crop diagnostic app with over 10 million active farmers, primarily in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. A photo is enough: the AI identifies within seconds from 780 plant pathologies (fungal, bacterial, viral diseases, pests, nutrient deficiencies) and recommends appropriate chemical or biological treatment. Claimed diagnosis accuracy reaches 98% on the 30 major crops.
The basic model is entirely free and needs no account. A partnership with Corteva Agriscience integrated Plantix into this multinational seed company's field tools. The API is available to input retailers and cooperatives wanting to embed the diagnostic engine in their own app. The interface is not available in French, and databases are better calibrated for tropical pathologies than European crops.
Our verdict
Ideal tool for a field technician or farmer wanting quick first identification of a phytosanitary problem without cost. Significant limitations for French crops: algorithms are optimised for tropical context, and the lack of French language hampers adoption. Must be complemented by agronomic advisor input before any treatment.
