Sketch

Native macOS UI/UX design tool, designer reference, real-time collaboration, and plugin ecosystem

Design & web

Overview

Sketch is the native macOS UI/UX design tool, founded in 2010, an incontestable reference for designers. It offers an infinite canvas, design systems, real-time collaboration, version control, developer handoff, and an extensive plugin gallery (100+). The Standard plan costs $12/month per editor (annual billing) with unlimited documents, unlimited free viewers, and history; Professional ($24/month) adds SSO and group permissions; Enterprise ($44/month) includes SCIM provisioning, BYOK encryption, dedicated support. A Mac-only license at $120 (one-time purchase) remains available for those rejecting the subscription model. Sketch offers a 30-day free trial.

Sketch is available in English only. The API is not publicly documented for third-party integrations; Sketch prioritises its plugin ecosystem (several hundred available) to extend functionality: design systems (Frontify), workflow (Overflow for user flows), prototyping (ProtoPie, Principle), assets (Unsplash), compression (SVGO), and integrations (Slack, Notion, Jira, Zeplin). Sketch shines for its lightweight architecture (native macOS), friction-free interface (rapid tool access), and performance on medium-complexity files. However, it is entirely limited to macOS: no Windows, web, or Linux version. For mixed desktop/mobile teams or those seeking a web-based platform, Sketch is not viable. Per-editor cost ($12-24/month) scales rapidly for teams of 10+ compared to Figma.

Our verdict

Best for macOS designers wanting a dedicated, lightweight tool without excess complexity and a strong plugin ecosystem. Avoid if your team mixes macOS and Windows, or if you seek web-based collaboration or advanced AI features: Figma is more versatile.
