Substack
Publish your newsletter, podcast or videos and monetize your subscribers directly, no fixed commission
Overview
Substack is a publishing platform letting a creator, consultant or SMB launch a newsletter, podcast or video channel and build direct subscriber relationships without ad intermediaries. Publishing is entirely free: no platform subscription, no contract. When the creator enables paid subscriptions, Substack takes 10% of payments plus Stripe processing fees - the author keeps roughly 90% of gross revenue after card fees. No paid tiers exist on the tool side: the business model rests entirely on revenue sharing with monetizing creators.
The site and app interface remains primarily in English, with partial French translation appearing since 2024 on some elements; you can write and publish a newsletter entirely in English without difficulty. Substack has no public API or advanced marketing integrations (no CRM, no advanced automation): it's a publishing and direct monetization tool, not a full email marketing platform like Mailchimp or ActiveCampaign.
Our verdict
Best for content creators, consultants and subject experts wanting to quickly launch a newsletter or podcast and monetize a loyal audience with no upfront cost. Avoid if you need advanced marketing automation, fine segmentation or CRM integration: Mailchimp, Brevo or ActiveCampaign will remain more suited.
