Turnitin

The global standard for academic plagiarism detection, now with AI detection

Détection & anti-plagiat

Overview

Turnitin is the most-used plagiarism solution in worldwide higher education, with an unmatched database (hundreds of billions of pages and tens of millions of academic works). Since 2023, it includes an AI content detection module flagging passages likely generated by LLM. Access is restricted to institutions (universities, business schools, high schools) via annual contract.

Individuals cannot subscribe directly. Some third-party services offer indirect access to iThenticate technology (Turnitin's engine), such as Scribbr. Turnitin's plagiarism accuracy is the best on the market; AI detection accuracy remains uncertain like everywhere.

Our verdict

Turnitin is out of reach for SMEs: it's designed for and sold to educational institutions. If your organization is a school or accredited training body, it's the undisputed reference. For everyone else, alternatives like Copyleaks, Originality.ai, or Compilatio offer comparable features at accessible cost. Important reminder: even Turnitin produces false positives on AI detection.
