Our verdict: Square
Best for shops and restaurants who want free POS software, one of the market's lowest in-person commissions (1.65%), and hardware available immediately, with the software cost and the per-transaction commission kept clearly apart. Not for you if you trade in France and your priority is an NF525 certificate from an accredited French body: Square relies on an attestation and pre-audit, to be validated before committing.
Our verdict: Zettle by PayPal
Best for small shops, markets, food trucks, and tradespeople who want to start taking payments from day one without a subscription, on a EUR 29 net reader; if you trade in France, the LNE certification covers your anti-fraud obligation. Not for you if your volume exceeds a few thousand euros per month: the fixed 1.75% commission eventually costs more than a subscription with reduced commission, and the POS does not manage the floor or kitchen.
We look at what you actually need and tell you which one to set up (or a third that fits better).
