Our verdict: SumUp
Best for merchants, tradespeople, and small restaurateurs trading in France who want a POS certified under French VAT anti-fraud law (NF525) without a mandatory subscription, and a payment terminal in the same contract. Outside France the certification means nothing to you and SumUp competes on its commission and its hardware alone. Not for you if you manage a restaurant with complex table service or multiple locations: floor management and multi-site control lag well behind specialized restaurant POS systems.

Best for independent shops in France already equipped with an iPad who want published pricing, a 15-day trial, and zero lock-in, at EUR 29/month net entry price. Not for you if your fleet runs Android or Windows, if you must hook the POS to many business tools (integrations stop at Zapier in the most expensive plan), or if you need a named NF525 certificate to produce in a French tax audit.
